 Today is

BALTIMORE, MD (November 20, 2008) — In recognition of the 2008 Great American Smokeout, the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DHMH) reminds Marylanders that phone-based counseling and free nicotine replacement products are available to assist with tobacco cessation efforts.

This annual event, celebrated this year on November 20, is designed to encourage smokers to quit for one day, with the hope that they will no longer use tobacco products.  It provides an ideal time for citizens to take advantage of the services offered by the Maryland Tobacco Quitline at 1-800-QUIT-NOW (784-8669).

The Quitline provides free phone-based counseling in English and Spanish, as well as free nicotine replacement (NRT) products while supplies last.  NRT is available to tobacco users who are age 18 and over and meet basic health requirements. Other benefits of the Quitline include an interactive Web site and referral to community cessation services.

"Quitting smoking is one of the most important steps individuals can take to improve their health," said DHMH Secretary John M. Colmers.  “The Great American Smokeout provides an excellent incentive for Maryland smokers to call the Quitline to help them succeed."

The Maryland Tobacco Quitline can be accessed at 1-800-QUIT-NOW (784-8669).  Quit Coaches are available from 8:00 a.m. to midnight, seven days a week.  Further information about the Quitline and its services is available online at www.smokingstopshere.com.
