How long does an autopsy take and will it effect
funeral
arrangements?
An autopsy usually takes 2-4 hours and should not
effect the family's plans
for a viewing or the funeral arrangements. The
Medical Examiner's Office and funeral directors
work closely to accommodate families' needs.
-
What is a pending
case?
Cases are pended so that the family can proceed with
funeral arrangements before a cause of death has been
established.
When the cause of death is not immediately determined
at autopsy, the case is considered "pending." Cases
are often pended when additional medical reports are
necessary to establish the cause of death. As soon
as the medical examiner can make a diagnosis, the case
is unpended. The OCME
sends a letter to vital records stating the cause and
manner of death. The funeral home is then notified so
that they can obtain the death certificate for the
family.
