NEW HealthCare For more families!

Begins July 1, 2008!

Beginning July 1, 2008, Medical Assistance for Families benefits will be expanded to include comprehensive health care coverage for eligible families with children.  Medical Assistance for Families provides health care to parents with dependent children and other family members caring for children with incomes up to 116% of the Federal Poverty Level (FPL) or about $20,000 annually for a family of three.  Prior to July 1, 2008, Medical Assistance would cover children in families with incomes up to 300% of the FPL or about $53,000 annually for family three, but only would cover their parents or other family members caring for children with incomes up to approximately 30% of the FPL or about $6,000 annually for family of three.  As a result of this change, many more parents and other family members caring for children will be able to get health care from Medical Assistance.  The income eligibility chart indicates the approximate monthly and annual income limit and household size.  Benefits for parents and other family members caring for children will be the same as those currently available under Medical Assistance.  Please see http://www.dhmh.state.md.us/mma/healthchoice/ for benefit and MCO information.

There are several changes to make it easier to apply for Medical Assistance for Families program beginning July 1, 2008!  These changes include:
  • No asset limit;
  • No face-to-face interview required;
  • Shorter application for families, children, and pregnant women;
  • Option to apply online via the Service Access Information Link (SAIL) system www.marylandSAIL.org;
  • Option to apply by mail or fax; and,
  • Local Health Departments accepting applications for families.
