Installing Adobe Acrobat Reader ® On Windows 95/98

1)  Be sure you have selected the appropriate version for your machine on the Adobe download page.   (Windows 95, etc.)  Click on the "Download" button.

2)  When the "Save As" window pops up (automatically), note to where on your hard disk you are saving the file and the name of the file.  Generally, most people will place downloads in "My Documents," "My Briefcase," or another designated folder on their hard disk -- "Downloads," for example.  If you wish to change your Windows' download location, click on the arrow-down button in the "Save in" location on the download window to save the file where you want it.

3)  When the download is complete, exit your browser, close all open Windows applications, and locate the file you just downloaded.  (Version 4.0 -- the latest as of this webpage posting -- has the name "ar40eng.exe".  You can use Win 9x's Find feature to locate it by clicking on Start, scrolling up to Find, then selecting Files or Folders.)

4)  Double-click on the file and follow the directions.  Note:  If you have an earlier version of Adobe Acrobat Reader, the setup program will tell you to remove the older version before installing the latest version.  (Do this by exiting the setup program, then click on Start, Settings, Control Panel, and Add/Remove Programs.   Scroll down through the list of programs and click on "Adobe Acrobat"  to highlight it, then click the Add/Remove button and confirm that you wish to remove the older version.  Once the older version is removed, restart installing the new version.)

5)  It will most likely prompt you to restart your computer in a dialogue box.  Do so in order for the new Acrobat software to become immediately available for you to be able to view a .pdf file.

6)  If you are new to all this downloading and installing stuff, STOP!  Consult with your office's designated PC technician,  "guru," or "whiz."  He or she will be more than happy to help you; Remember that they were once neophytes at Windows and the Web.
